Guyana’s most internationally recognized body builder Hugh Arlington Ross has once again proven that he is indeed in a class of his own when he flexed his way to the Masters Over-50 title at the NABBA World Championships which took place at the Dolmen Resort Hotel, Oracle Conference Centre on Saturday evening last.
Ross who placed second last year having scored a single point less than the winner, Gary Lister said that he was eager to prove that he was indeed the best among his rivals.
Commenting on the win, Ross said that it was extremely satisfying since he was able to make it right from the 2014 event which took place in Ireland.
“I didn’t like the 2014 result at all because there were resulting mixed reviews that came from the judges and audience. To that effect, that was something that was bothering me for ever since then and one I committed to doing this event this year I decided to change a lot in my training regime.”
The seasoned campaigner decided to make some adjustments to his structure including his diet in order to be more competitive. He decided to trade in some of his trade mark details/striations to add a few more pounds since on the European scene, almost everyone goes for size.
“I felt that that I could have added a few more pounds and come in just as detailed which I did. Last year I competed at 197 pounds or so and this year I was right on the top of the scale at 200 pounds.”
Increasing his weight and be just as striated as when he was light, did not come easy according to Ross.
“The key factor evolved around the pre and post training meals so as to keep the muscles intact without burning them out although you ware working them to capacity. So I had to be quite meticulous along the line doing that.”
The competition in Malta was by no means easy Ross declared, noting that every year new blood comes on to the scene but he was focused on the task at hand and ready to conquer all based on last year’s results.
“In Europe, these athletes do not play with a level deck of cards but of course one does not have evidence because there is no testing here but from my experience I can tell with total clarity from one glance. To that effect it entails me working quadruple harder to be able to stand up and compete on the same stage with them. I have no problem with that, basically with my discipline and work ethics I’m always very confident.”
It was the champion’s intention that if he was to have won it would be by a very large margin between himself and the second place athlete which would have left no doubt as to who the real winner was.
Ross won the 2010 Mr. Universe Masters title but did not compete in 2011. In 2012 he was the World Champion and did not compete in 2013. In 2014 Ross was second at The World Championships and took the crown in 2015.
Following the Pre-Judging, 11 athletes entered the finals with Ross taking the top spot followed by Justin Trollope of Wales, with the United Kingdom’s Ken Prescott placing third.
Ross informed that he has been booked for a number of photo shoots in Malta and will also visit Rome which he always wanted to do since he was a child and would have also studied Rome quite extensively before returning to his home in New York.
