A Port Mourant Corentyne family is now pleading for assistance after two armed bandits entered their home and business premises and then proceeded to rob them. The intruders helped themselves to US, Canadian and
local currencies, their passports with both US and Canadian Visas and jewellery before escaping around 13:00 on Thursday.
Vevkasammy Bangari, 42, a business man and a livestock farmer of Lot 56 Babu Jaan, Port Mourant, lived at the two-storey wood and concrete house with his wife, Rooknarine Virasami, 36, and their two children Jessica 14 and Allan 9.
The man has been operating the business premises for over 16 years. He stated that he had just left to go into the house, leaving his wife in a hammock in the shop when the two armed unmasked bandits entered–one with a long gun and another with a short gun.
The woman recalled that as her husband got up, the men entered and asked for two bottles of Banks Beer. Before she could move one of the men pushed the display case to the ground and jumped over the counter. She began to holler and was hit in the head with a small gun. The wound required three stitches. Her husband stated that after hearing the commotion he went to investigate. He was confronted by a man with a shot gun. He was told to lie on his face.
His wife was dragged and placed beside him and they were told to lie face down and not to look.
The bandit with the small gun went upstairs while the bandit with the long gun remained guard over them.
The thief ransacked the upper flat and returned with a black bag that contained the cash, jewellry, passports and other valuables. They begged them not to take the passports. The men left two of the four passports. They also took the day’s sales and some phone cards before stealing two bicycles and escaping towards the back lands. The woman and her son’s passports were taken. They were expected to leave the country on July 10. The man and his daughter were expected to leave the county on August 20. The ordeal lasted for about five minutes.
Bangari stated that after the men left he began running after them, shouting for ‘thief’, but stopped after the men fired a shot in his direction. Residents subsequently came out and the police were contacted, but they took some time to arrive. One of the bicycles was abandoned a few streets away.
A small gun which was described as those used to start races was found in the upper flat of the building.
Investigations are ongoing.
