The Barbados Tridents opened their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title defence
with victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors last evening at the Kensington Oval in Barbados by 49 runs.
The tournament, dubbed the biggest party in sport, opened to a packed Oval as the charged up fans anticipated an exciting contest.
They were not too disappointed as proceedings started with the home side winning the toss and electing to bat. They were pegged back early as the Warriors picked up some early wickets. However, Shoaib Malik with 39, Jonathan Carter 25, and man-of-the-match Kieron Pollard 48 pushed the Tridents to 158 for 6 off their 20 overs. Sunil Narine led the bowling for the Warriors with 2-22.
The Warriors got off to an eventful start which saw both Lendl Simmons and Tillakaratne Dilshan both missed being out. However, they lost wickets along the way at intervals, failing to find the boundary as often as they should, and eventually folded for 109 off 18 overs. Brad Hodge 26 and Dilshan 24 led the batting effort as Ravi Rampaul and Robin Peterson each took 3 wickets, while Pollard had two for the winners.
The Amazon Warriors are again in action on Friday against the Zouks and will look to commence a winning streak as they aim to record their first win of the CPL tournament after being runner up in the previous editions.
The action however, continues today at the Beausejour ground in St Lucia with the St Lucia Zouks facing the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel from 4:00pm.
