Residents of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, say they are fed up and frustrated that nothing has been done over the last twelve years to correct the deplorable state of the main access road to the community.
This is despite numerous complaints having been made by the residents to the relevant authorities.
They lamented to this newspaper yesterday, that they believe that the previous Government had turned a blind eye to their situation, and they are now calling on the present administration to do something.
The residents noted that they are highlighting the condition of the main access road because of its importance to the community. There are huge craters in almost every street in Kaneville.
One resident, Mr. McLean, who has lived in the area for over twelve years, said that the road which was constructed some time ago replaced a “red sand road”. He explained that as an abundance of heavy duty trucks and machinery traversed the area, the road began to develop potholes which grew bigger over time.
According to another resident, former President Bharrat Jadgeo, during a community meeting in 2004, challenged the residents to hold the government to task as $250M has been earmarked to be spent on drains, roads, electricity and water.
He added that the Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) Chairman visited the area some three years ago and promised villagers that he would meet with the relevant authorities to have the issue rectified. This promise, however, bore no fruit and the situation went from “bad to worse”.
“Wheh it deh right now in that state is terrible and it affecting everybody, including the children who can’t even play when the afternoon come. Parents scared for the life of their kids because you now have to wonder if a lil one gon fall in di holes on the road and buss he head.”
One concerned driver said that his vehicle is constantly in the workshop because of the damage the huge pot holes has done
“We living under this pressure for years now, it is getting overbearing” the driver said.
The residents noted that because of the condition of the road, public transportation operators refuse to traverse the street forcing the residents to have to walk.
