Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, yesterday, visited the Maternity Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), and interacted with nurses and doctors. The Minister learnt
first-hand what was happening in that department and what is required to ensure it operates more efficiently.
The Minister spoke to the head of the department, Dr. Lucio Pedro and Dr. Lindsey Evans, a consultant, both of whom explained the operations of the maternity ward.
Not knowing what had existed before, she recognised that the team was hard working, and whilst there were some maternal deaths, Dr. Pedro was trying to correct this.
“Some are systemic errors, but more or less, human resources are adequate. We are working together to ensure that we boost the system in terms of their needs,” Minister Dr. Cummings stated.
The issue of overcrowding in the wards with more than one patient to a bed will be rectified. Minister Cummings pointed to the fact, that work is currently ongoing on an extension to the ward.
Minister Cummings also commended the doctors in the Maternity Ward whom she noted were doing admirable work. She added that they are working with standard treatment guidelines explaining that with the different years of student nurses and the General Medical Officer, “this will be a good team working together in cases of emergencies,” she declared.
Regarding caesarean births, there is now a theatre in the Maternity Ward which will be expanded to allow an Intensive Care Unit to adjoin it. This, the Minister pointed out would help prevent them from having to go to the main theatre located in a different part of the hospital.
The Minister concluded that “all in all efforts are being made to improve the system…that’s a good sign.”
Others who were present during the Minister’s visit, included officials of the hospital, ward sisters and the Chief Executive Officer Michael Khan.
