West Coast school Stewartville Secondary started their Digicel Schools Football tournament campaign by demolishing West Bank Demerara’s Endeavour 3-0 at the Leonora ground in what turned out to be total mismatch
yesterday afternoon.
Trishon Telman, Kerry Harvey and Christopher Nelson all found the back of the nets as Stewartville enjoyed almost total ball possession against the much smaller students from the Endeavour school in a game which started close to an hour late in a drizzle.
In the 10th minute 16-year-old forward Telman hammered a shot from close range to beat the startled Custodian Nascio Bayely who turned out to be the only bright spot in the Endeavour side with a few of good saves to limit the margin of victory somewhat.
Though the bigger Stewartville players had the ball for 98% of the game they failed to convert their advantage into goals and at the half, the score read Stewartville 1, Endeavour 0 as the entire first half was played inside Endeavor’s half.
Stewartville’s erratic shooting, at times with an open goal in front of their strikers, continued from the opposite end in the second half before a solo run from the left flank by the unmarked Harvey saw him easily patting the ball into the goal despite a valiant effort from Bayley to prevent it from going over the goal line.
Things got so bad for Endeavour and so boring for Stewartville’s custodian that he was seen relaxing on his back with the action in full swing at the other end. When Stewartville got their shots on target they were tame ones which Bayley easily collected but the more powerful shots were wide of the mark or sailed over the crossbar.
Their third goal, scored in the 62nd minute, was a well controlled effort from Nelson who collected a perfect pass from the left back and hammered it into the back of the net. The match continued to be played in Endeavour’s half and only twice did Stewartville’s goalkeeper get to touch the ball.
The first was when one of the defense players needlessly passed the ball back to him from the middle of the field and when Endeavour made it’s only raid on goal. With all of 11 players looking to score including their Goalie, who left his goal unprotected to try and dribble past a bemused youngster from Endeavour the final whistle was blown much to the relief of the West Bank unit.
