Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, on June 16, reiterated Government’s aim to provide subventions to the country’s trade unions in order that they are in a better position to address workers’ issues. This recommitment was stated at the Enmore Martyrs’ commemorative Wreath Laying ceremony at Enmore Village, East Coast of Demerara on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister said, “The government will give trade unions a subvention to help them carry out their work, to better represent their workers. In order to educate the children of the working people, this Government will restore subventions to the Critchlow Labour College.” This move is to ensure that trade unions fulfil their mandate to adequately represent workers across the sectors, and also educate them about their rights and labour laws.
Government’s move follows the announcement made by President David Granger to restore the subvention to the Critchlow Labour College. This annual subvention was discontinued under the previous regime.
The President said his Government will revise relevant labour legislation to support all legally constituted and functioning trade unions to enable them to better represent the needs of workers.
“Your Government will introduce measures to promote social cohesion and protect vulnerable groups. We shall work towards healing the rifts between social groups in the country. We shall re-establish cordial relationships with civil society, religious organisations and trade unions. We have the responsibility to restore the integrity and viability of working people and non-governmental organisations, which have been gravely undermined,” President Granger stated in his address at the formal opening of 11th Parliament, on June 10.
The Critchlow Labour College was established in 1967 as the education arm of the trade union movement, and was named after the late father of the local trade union movement, Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow.
The college provides pre-university courses in industrial relations, business, sociology and a Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate programme for school-leavers who need these qualifications. (GINA)
