Jasodra Mangoor, the woman who had allegedly set herself ablaze two weeks ago, died on Tuesday after fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
According to initial reports the woman’s demise was anticipated by family members as doctor’s reports would have indicated that chances to the woman’s survival were minimal.
Neighbours rushed Mangoor, 58, of 118 Curbane Park, Annandale, and a mother of six, to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPHC. She had sustained severe third degree burns to her upper body on June 3, last.
Kaieteur News was told that the woman was acting out of frustration when she doused herself with kerosene in her kitchen area then locked herself in her room and set herself ablaze.
Mangoor, was reportedly pushed to ‘the edge’ by the constant verbal abuse meted out to her by her children, especially her 12-year-old daughter.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman had freed herself of a very abusive relationship with her husband and has since been working hard to make a better life for her children. However according to neighbours all she got in return was ingratitude from her children.
But there was a twist to the story. A source close to the woman said that the woman’s reputed husband had disclosed that on the night of the incident, his wife was consuming alcohol when she was doused with kerosene and set afire by her children.
On fire, the woman ran out to a yard bathroom where she put out the fire by showering. It was then that she was rushed to the hospital by neighbours. The source added out that if the woman had indeed set herself ablaze in her room there would have been damage to the room, for the time that the children claim she was locked in there.
Kaieteur News was told that the allegation against the woman’s children has been reported to the Ministry of Human Services.
