A man who allegedly stole a bag of rice from a market vendor after she refused to pay him, found himself before the court yesterday to answer four charges.
Trevor James of Norton Street, Wortmanville, admitted to the court that on June 11, he used threatening behaviour to Chandrawattie Baldeo.
He was fined $5000 with an alternative of 20 days imprisonment on this charge. He informed the magistrate that he will serve the 20 days because he had no money to pay the fine.
It was further alleged that on the day in question, at Bourda Green he had a silver blade knife in his possession without reasonable explanation. He is accused of resisting the arrest of a city constable officer and behaving disorderly.
James is also accused of stealing a bag of rice valued $2,500 from Baldeo on May 25, at Bourda Green.
The defendant pleaded guilty to these charges after they were read to him by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
James explained to the court that Baldeo owes him money but has refused to pay him.
“She owe me money, so I tek the rice”, he said. He also told the court that he threatened the woman because she didn’t want to pay him. However, he disclosed that at the time of the altercation he was under the influence of alcohol.
As it relates to the possession of an unlawful weapon charge, the defendant detailed that he is actively involved in community clean-up projects and would use the knife to cut various items.
His next court appearance will be tomorrow, before the Chief Magistrate.
