(www.caribbeanbasketball.com) In a Championship game for the ages, Bahamas came back from a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat Jamaica 55-51 in the gold medal game of the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s Championship at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola.
Jamaica started the first quarter on a 10-2 run, a pattern that would become familiar throughout the game. But the Bahamians tied the game at 10 on a Shanea Armbrister put-back with 58 seconds to play in the first quarter that ended with Jamaica up 11-10.
The Jamaicans started the second quarter the same way as they did the first, with a 10-2 run. The Bahamas got to within three points on an Armbrister three-pointer with 52 seconds left in the half, only to see Jamaica finish the period on 5-1 burst. The half ended with Jamaica up 31-24.
The start of the third quarter was a repeat of the first two, with Jamaica opening up on a 10-2 run. Shenneika Smith gave Jamaica a 15-point lead with a basket at the 4:48 mark, her team’s biggest lead of the game.
The Bahamians answered with a 10-2 run of its own, however, Armbrister scored six straight points to close out the period. Jamaica led after three quarters, 43-36.
Armbrister opened the scoring in the fourth with a three-pointer to get the Bahamians to within four. Philicia Kelly finally tied the game at 49 with 3:50 remaining, and a Sha-Londa Neely bucket gave her team its first lead of the game at 51-49 with 2:19 to play.
The Bahamas extended the lead to four at 53-49 with just over a minute left when Smith scored to get Jamaica back to within two at 53-51 with 54 seconds to play.
But the Bahamas defence held the rest of the way, and Diasti Delancy iced the game with a layup as time expired.
Armbrister finished with 16 points for the Bahamas, while Kelly had 12. Neely finished with 6 points and 17 rebounds, and Ashley Moss pulled down 16 boards for the Bahamas.
