Under a clear night sky the left-handed pair of Guyana Captain Leon Johnson
and Robin Bacchus spurred the Guyana Rest team to four-wicket win off the penultimate ball of their innings against the Guyana Amazon Warriors last night at the Providence Stadium.
This was the first of two practice games in preparation for the 2015 CPL t20 cricket competition which begins in Barbados on Saturday with the Warrior s facing defending champs Barbados.
The Franchise team batted first under lights and Trevon Griffith and Lendl Simmons were removed by pacers Paul Wintz and Ronsford Beaton respectively, as both new ball bowlers, members of the ‘Warriors’ team which depart Guyana for Barbados on Wednesday, played for the Rest Team which restricted the CPL side to 131-6. The Rest Team responded with 132-6 from 19.5 overs.
The 40-year-old pair of Brad Hodge, who made 16 from 17 balls and Shiv Chanderpaul who made a slow but solid 48 from 54 balls added 37 for the third wicket from 39 balls before Hodge was bowled off the inside edge by pacer Raun Johnson.
Chanderpaul, who picked the gaps and ran hard between the wickets, got going with a sweetly timed cover driven boundary off Beaton but reached the ropes only three more times as he scored at a strike rate of less than 100.
Chanderpaul was joined by fellow left-hander Assad Fudadin and with the fourth wicket
partnership worth 66 from 55 balls Chanderpaul was run out just as he seemed to be looking to step on gas.
Wintz had Chris Barnwell, who arrived at the crease with just three overs remaining, LBW for two. Beaton bowled Sunil Narine as both pacers enjoyed a good night at the office to finish with 2-28 and 2-18 respectively, leaving Fudadin not out on 37 from 26 balls decorated with three fours and a six.
The Rest Team began their reply in positive fashion with Bacchus hammering Andre Stoll for consecutive boundaries on either side of the wicket before savagely pulling fast bowler Keon Joseph to the mid-wicket boundary to the delight of a decent gathering of close to 500 fans.
Anthony Bramble was removed cheaply and Johnson got off the mark with a couple of spanking off-side fours while Bacchus cut Stoll, who was switched to the northern end, audaciously to the backward point boundary.
Johnson reached 35 with four fours and a six from 28 balls before he pulled a short ball from Joseph to Fudadin at short mid-wicket.
Steven Jacobs and Bacchus looked good despite two maidens bowled by off-spinner Narine before Jacobs (17) had his leg stump knocked out by under-19 pacer Kemo Paul.
The aggressive Bacchus was bowled by off-spinner Hodge for 31 from 23 balls with six fours and Narine returned to take two quick wickets to catches behind the stumps by the versatile West Indies under-19 player Shemron Hetymer.
But Royston Crandon (11*) and Steven Sankar saw their side to victory on the slow track and fast outfield against a team missing it’s three West Indies players and three of their four overseas International players who will meet the team in Barbados. Narine had 2-13 from 4 overs. The last practice game is set for today from 16:00hrs at the Stadium.
