– Women end sixth
Guyana’s National Men’s Rugby team surrendered their North America Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Sevens title over the weekend when they competed in Cary, North Carolina at WakeMed Soccer Park.
The USA, unquestionably the strongest team in the tournament, finished as champions after beating Canada 21-5, while Mexico defeated Cayman Islands 26-19 to take third place.
Guyana continued its mastery over Jamaica with a 19-5 win for fifth place while, Bahamas squeezed past Barbados 10-5 to finish in the penultimate position.
Guyana’s performance placed them third in the NACRA Championships and they failed in their bid to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.
On Saturday in the round robin competition, Guyana, playing in Pool ‘B’ won their first match 38-19 against Bahamas then narrowly lost to Cayman Islands 14-12 in their second match of the day.
The final game on Saturday saw Guyana engage Canada and they were soundly thrashed 51-0.
The following day proved to be a better one for the Guyanese as they beat arch rivals Trinidad and Tobago 29-5 in their final round robin matchup.
They faced the Jamaicans to wrap up their participation and came away with a 19-5 triumph.
They will now turn their attention to the Pan American Games later this month.
Meanwhile, the Guyana’s Women’s team finished sixth overall in North Carolina after being out of the tournament for the past three years.
USA Women bullied their way in the Cup Competition with an 88-0 win over Mexico, while Trinidad edged out Jamaica 12-10 to finish third and Guyana lost to Cayman Islands 12-5. Bahamas destroyed Barbados 36-5 to end seventh.
