Following the death of 41-year-old, Carol Bollers, of Festival City, South Ruimveldt, a post mortem (PM) was done at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) last week to set the minds of the woman’s family at ease. However the results are allegedly being withheld by the hospital which claims to be conducting further investigations.
Robert Greaves, Bollers’s grieving husband, is overwhelmed because he was expecting an immediate release of the results. He said, “It is strange that the autopsy was done and the family cannot get the results.”
Greaves believes that GPHC is responsible for his wife’s death. He opined that the results being withheld represent a strategy being used by the hospital to conspire in the covering up of their malpractice which led to his wife’s demise.
A press release by GPHC had stated that the woman was admitted to the hospital with a ruptured uterine membrane (which suggests that she may have had a botched abortion) and was being treated for that during her admission. The husband has since refuted knowledge of such.
He said that although he is not ruling out the possibility of his wife having an abortion, he is not aware of it as up to the time when he took her to the hospital she was not bleeding and a doctor who attended to her, could verify.
He also maintained that he had no knowledge of his wife’s pregnancy until her admission. However, he said that he had suspected that she was pregnant and had even suggested that she have a test done but she was reluctant in doing so.
The anguished Greaves pointed out that the real issue does not lie with whether his wife had a botched abortion, rather his concern is the fact that she was operated on without his consent and now the withholding of her PM results.
“They operated on her without my consent, to save her life as they say but yet she is dead…”
Kaieteur News understands that Bollers underwent two surgeries within hours; neither of which was consented to by the woman’s family. It was not until Greaves visited his wife that he was informed about the operations.
According to Greaves, the first operation was to remove her uterus to stop the bleeding, but after the bleeding continued she was cut open again to make sure that there was no part of the uterus remaining.
In tears the devastated husband reminisced on seeing his wife lying like a “dead woman” with tubes attached to her. He said that the doctors had told him that she appeared lifeless because “they had to paralyze her due to the profuse bleeding.”
“They butchered the woman inside out… and the whole country knows it. The doctor that operated on her was not present and the doctors, who spoke with me, spoke to me as if I was an idiot. They butcher people all the time and lie to you,” Greaves blurted out.
Ever since his wife’s death Greaves said that he feels as though he will suffer a psychological breakdown. “I feel like I going mad! I am going mad lady! I can’t take this… I could hardly eat.”
The man opined that the maternal and other medical deaths due to the negligence and malpractice of health practitioners are unbecoming in Guyana and it must end. He has signaled his intentions to take the necessary actions to get justice for his wife. “I will not stop with this until I expose them… I will take it as far as I need to go.”
Just last month the institute recorded a maternal death. Twenty-year-old Yonette Williams-Grey died after a C-section on May 10, last. The results from the post mortem which was performed by Dr. Nehaul Singh, at GPHC revealed that the young mother had died from compounded lung distress and hypertension (high blood pressure).
The first time mother, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was transferred to GPHC from the Suddie Hospital after doctors had performed emergency surgery on her.
According to initial reports the woman’s medical condition was compounded by poor attention by nurses at the Oscar Joseph Hospital at Charity.
