We Ready to complete this mission – SVG Head Coach Huggins
By Franklin Wilson
St. Vincent and the Grenadines ‘Vincy Heat’ arrived in Guyana yesterday via the Ogle International Airport
on a LIAT flight for tomorrow’s all important return FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Qualifying match against Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ at the Providence Stadium.
The two countries battled to an exciting 2-2 draw on Wednesday last at the Arnos Vale Play Field on the island of St. Vincent in an afternoon encounter. Guyana will start with a slight advantage having scored two away goals but St. Vincent’s Head Coach Cornelius Huggins said they are ready to disappoint the home team and fans.
“To be truthful, the team ready, we ready; they know what’s the job at hand and want to just complete this mission here on Sunday, we have to get a win.”
Reflecting on Wednesday’s game at home, Huggins said that they should have won that encounter convincingly.
“As you know when you get an opportunity you have to make use of it and that was the outcome of the game.”
The former St. Vincent & the Grenadines defender said they created many chances which were not put away which resulted in the 2-2 score line.
Conscious that if the game were to end in a similar result it would require extra time to determine the winner since only one team advances, Huggins stated: “We really don’t want to go to that, we have to win this game in 90 minutes.”
He said that winning the game and advancing would mean a lot to his nation noting that they are showcasing the young talented players on the island. Vincy Heat has three overseas based
players in their team, Cornelius Stewart who plays in Finland, Gavin James who competes in England and Oalex Anderson who is on the Seattle Sounders roster.
Meanwhile, Captain Dorren Hamlet said that while they did not get the result that they would have liked at home, they are very confident they can get the job done in this second leg match tomorrow at Providence.
Like Head Coach Huggins, Hamlet said that they failed to bury the many chances they would have created in the first leg match.
“Once we take our chances in this second leg I think we should move forward.”
Playing under lights will not work against them Captain Hamlet stated, he informed that they spent one week at home preparing for this eventuality.
The journey to qualify for Russia 2018 will be a long and arduous one for the winner of this two-legged rubber as will the other winners of Round 2 ties in the CONCACAF region.
When the draw was held on January 15, 2015, in Miami Beach, Florida, USA, CONCACAF had stated that Round Three will follow from August 31-September 8 of this year, and consists of another series of home-and-away match-ups featuring the ten Round Two series winners, joined by the two Member Associations ranked 7 and 8 – Jamaica and Haiti.
The final six CONCACAF Member Associations (Costa Rica, Mexico, United States, Honduras, Panama, and Trinidad & Tobago – in order of rank) will join the competition for Round Four, which consists of three groups of four teams and is scheduled to be played in a round-robin format between November 2015 and September 2016.
Round Five, which will qualify three CONCACAF nations directly to the FIFA World Cup and provide a further intercontinental playoff spot for the fourth-placed team, will be played in the traditional six-team, hexagonal format among the top two teams from each Round Four group. This final round of World Cup Qualifying in CONCACAF is scheduled to be disputed from November 2016 to October 2017.
The match-ups for Round Three, as well as seeds for Round Four of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, will be determined at the FIFA World Cup Qualifying Draw in St. Petersburg, Russia, on July 25, 2015.
