Regma Primary School once again produced the top Region Ten student in the National Grade Six Assessment Examination, formerly known as the Common Entrance Examination.
The top performer is an aspiring Paediatrician, who at this time is a shy 11-year-old Nkechi Layne. She topped the Region with 521 marks.
According to the top student, she was not shocked when she heard the news. “I expected to do well, not only to top the Region, but also to probably be in the top ten for the country”. She said that she is very happy because she always wanted to attend Queen’s College.
The top performer says that she will continue her performance at her new school. ‘Always the head and not the tail,’ is the motto. Nkechi’s father, who is a tradesman technician, and her mother, a nursery school teacher, are very happy that the first of their two daughters has done so well.
Azzareya Allicock, an 11-year-old aspiring Neurosurgeon/Lawyer, was second in the Region with 518 marks. She is the second of five children. According to her, “I did it on my own with encouragement from my parents and help from my teachers. I got QC.”
She said that it was hard studying but she is very happy with her results. Her father, Lester Allicock, is a mechanic in Suriname, and her mother is a teacher at the Linden Foundation Secondary School.
Their teacher, simple and shy Symphia Griffith, who also taught the student who placed ninth in the Region, said, ‘To God be the Glory.’ She said that she is overwhelmed to have students in the regional top ten again.
In 2014 she was the teacher of the top performer in Region Ten. She said that she would like to see what would become of the students in the next ten years. She said that she teaches with that in mind and not just for the moment.
Ms. Griffith said that she started teaching at Christianburg Primary School. Going to Regma Primary she met a hard-working staff. ‘When I came here I worked with teachers who only wanted the best, and their main objective was to bring out the best in the students, not only in academics but in everything they do.”
They wanted to be top performers. “Even in the Physical Display competition recently in Georgetown, we won.”
She said that the batch of students was a good one, because the pupils had a good foundation from their past teachers.
Eleven-year-old La Tonya Hartman, with 514 marks, placed fifth in the Region. The aspiring doctor came from 78 Accabre Drive, Kara Kara. She is the older of two.
Shy but confident, she said that she is thankful to her teachers and her parents who were very supportive. Hartman said she expected to do better, but she thanks God for her results. She will be heading to Bishop’s High School in September.
Another 11-year-old, Trevon Jeffrey, of 293 Block 22 was ninth in the Region with 514 marks. The aspiring Scientist will also be heading to Bishop’s High School in the new school term. He said that he is very happy at his achievement.
His mother who is a vendor and his father, a welder at BOSAI, are very proud of him.
Visiting the Top Performers was newly appointed Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueria, who encouraged the students to continue doing their best.
