When he made his international debut he was an 18 year-old college boy. Guyana played Guatemala in a friendly in his home state of Atlanta and through the efforts of Colin Baker, who was in touch with his dad, Brandon Beresford was given the opportunity to play, the rest is now history.
Beresford, a midfield player, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday on July 15th, next, scored his first international for Guyana and Guyana’s first in the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 CONCACAF leg of qualifying at the Arnos Vale Play Field on Wednesday last in St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
The occasion was also Beresford’s first full international game for Guyana and he is still basking in the historical moment achieved. It is any player’s dream to score for his nation in such an important match.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with Beresford on his way back to Guyana on Thursday morning last at the E. T Joshua International Airport.
“It’s a great honour to be able to play and start with the national team, it means a lot. It means that the coach trusts me enough to hold down the position I was in, central midfield but getting the first goal of the competition was a great felling, the first competitive goal that I have ever scored for Guyana, it means a lot.”
The lanky player said the result, a 2-2 tie against the Vincy Heat means that Guyana has the advantage based on the away goals rule.
“This is good for us and overall it’s a very good feeling and I am glad that I was able to actually make something like this happen.”
The former Graceland University student, who studied visual communications and graphic design, says he is seeking to land a contract in either Europe or the United States which is another dream of his, playing professional football.
Beresford said that Guyana has a very strong team that can better the achievements of the previous World Cup Qualifying side.
“I think that if we can continue to get better as a team then we would definitely go far. I think that we could get to the same level that we were at the last go around and eventually we can push a little bit further.”
