DEAR EDITOR,
The people of Guyana have waited 23 years for change. For some of us this day couldn’t be sooner; it’s like life has started all over again, a breath of fresh air. With this new Government and the resumption of parliament, the Guyanese people have so many expectations; especially for the Government’s 100 days plan to be executed as promised. But with all that said, and not forgetting the fact that the Government is relatively new and not all can be done at once, this is a matter of urgency.
I was somewhat astounded when a young friend of mine told me he was at the Ministry of Communities and was informed that house lots at Covent Garden are still being sold at preposterous prices… two million dollars to be exact.
Like I said in my above mentioned statement, the “Government is relatively new” but we would like for the new Government to look into these unpardonable, illogical malpractices the previous administration had burdened the Guyanese poorer class with over the years. It is outright absurd for any family, whether middle or higher class, to be paying for a plot of land in this dear land of ours. The poorer class was marginalized for too long, their voices were not heard; they were placed on the back burners and unrepresented for 23 years.
I hope that the President looks into this, as the people of Guyana are looking forward to brighter days. Under his administration there is a sense of purpose and belonging, so much so that young families are looking forward to owning their own homes in these communities where the previous administration made it impossible for them to do so. Their screams should not go unheard… Mr. President, help us!
