After spending almost one month on remand at the Georgetown Prisons, on a murder charge, Andre Gomes walked out of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts a free man, following the withdrawal of the charge.
Gomes also known as ‘Zip’ was accused of fatally shooting Nigel Isaacs on May 10, at Main Street, Georgetown.
Based on advice given by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), it was determined that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the allegation, and the court was informed of the withdrawal by Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry presided over the matter.
Gomes, who stood shackled in the prisoner’s dock, could be heard thanking the magistrate after the announcement was made in the presence of his attorney, Mark Waldron.
During Gomes’ first court appearance, the prosecutor had told the court that a spent shell was recovered from the crime scene the day after the incident. He had also explained that the spent shell recovered matches the gun of the accused.
Isaacs, 40, of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, was shot at around 00.25 hrs, during an altercation between Gomes and a taxi driver whose vehicle had struck a parked car.
Isaacs later succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
According to reports the shooting occurred minutes after Isaacs and Gomes had left a Main Street night club.
This publication was told that after the vehicle was damaged, the licenced firearm holder struck the taxi driver with the firearm. It was reportedly then that a round was accidentally discharged, and it struck Isaacs.
When the round was discharged the taxi driver reportedly tried to flee the scene, and Gomes pursued him, unaware that Isaacs had been shot.
A police release had stated that at approximately 00:25 hrs on May 10, the driver of HB 4024 accidentally struck motor car PPP 7994 that was parked in Main Street, Georgetown.
A confrontation ensued between the driver and the owner of the car, during which a gunshot was fired.
