Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) held their nerves to edge out arch rivals and defending champions Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) 3-1 on penalty kicks to win the third annual Patrick ‘Patto’ April Memorial Knockout Inter Secondary School U18 football competition, which was played for schools in the New Amsterdam/ Canje area.
The game was forced into penalty kicks after the encounter ended 0-0 at the end of regulation and overtime. The final, which was played at the All Saints Scott Church Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam, the venue for all of the matches, saw both teams giving it their all in a keenly contested encounter. Both teams missed chances of their own. In the end it was the TASS squad that wanted it more and prevailed on penalty kicks.
Earlier in the semi final encounters, BEI whipped Canje Secondary School (CSS) 2-0 with goals from Dwayne Aleen and Keon Williams, while TASS squeezed pass Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) 2-1. Orin Glenn and Joshua Wilson scored for TASS with Boris Griffith responding for VESS.
In earlier encounters, CSS got a walk over from New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI), while VESS got the better of Berbice High School 2-1. Scoring for VESS were Horace Griffith and Akeem Haynes, while Derrick Taylor responded for BHS.
In another game, TASS defeated New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS) 2-1with Orin Glen and Joshua Butts being on target for TASS. NAMS got their goal through a defence error.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, the winning TASS team were presented with a trophy and 15 gold medals, while BEI received a trophy and 15 silver medals compliments of the organizers and relatives of the late Patrick April.
TASS apart from winning the competition made a clean sweep of the individual awards. With the most valuable player awarding going to Joshua Butts, he received a trophy, the best goalkeeper on show was Stephan Hossannah , he received a pair of goalkeeping gloves. The most goals trophy was presented to Orin Glenn with two goals.
At the end of the game organizer Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey thanked both teams for a well played final and special words of commendation for the winners and outstanding players. He also thanked the sponsors for coming on board to sponsor the tournament.
Patrick April or “Patto” as he was known, was a popular football player and butcher in Berbice and Guyana who went on to represent Berbice on a number of occasions at various levels of the game. He once formed a potent combination with the famous Humphrey, Alphonso, Fords, Inniss’s and Samuels’s siblings among others that dominated the football arena.
The competition was coordinated by former national player Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey. He was assisted by former national player Kenrick Bowry and Randy ‘Blades’ Sears. (Samuel Whyte)
