Calls go out for early intervention by relevant Ministry
With the second half of the horseracing season almost two months away, controversy has started to step in with some five horserace meetings scheduled for five consecutive weeks during the months of July and August.
Pundits are already saying that it cannot work since there are not enough horses and spending power to sustain such a schedule.
Calls are ringing for the early intervention of newly appointed Minister of Education with responsibility for Sport Dr Rupert Roopnarine or his Deputy Nicolette Henry or Director of Spots Christopher Jones to intervene and bring some semblance of order to the multimillion dollars activity.
A look at the activities for so will show that The Bush Lot United Turf Club (BLUTC) has an event scheduled for July 25th; the Four Horsemen promotion has a meet scheduled for Sunday 2nd August, 2015, at the Port Mourant Turf Club (PMTC). The Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) has a meet set for Sunday 9th August, 2015, The Jumbo Jet Business entity has scheduled the eight Guyana Cup Horserace meet for Sunday 16th August at the PMTC, while the Rising Sun Turf Club (RSTC) has their meet set for Sunday 23rd August, 2015, at their track.
With the release of the above information it seems like there is some sort of chaos stepping in and with the non existence of the necessary legislation persons are free to do as they please.
Persons in the horseracing circle are calling on the relevant Ministers to act quickly and help get the necessary legislation passed so that the sport could be regularized.
The previous Government especially the Minister of Sport Frank Anthony is being blamed for any confusion in the sport may be going through at the moment, since a draught copy of legislation was handed to the Administration more than a decade ago. The document was never tabled in Parliament to be debated.
In the meanwhile, the “Four Horsemen Promotion” has released a programme for their Emancipation horserace meet scheduled set for Sunday August 2nd.
The event will be highlighted by the feature A and lower event with a first prize of $1.5M over one mile with a total package of close to $3M.
The other events listed included two races for three year old horses with prize monies of $500,000 and $400,000, another for horses classified F2 and lower with prize being $400,000, one for G2 and lower animals with a winning purse of $380,000, while there is another for H2 and lower horses for a top purse of $350,000; there also one event for the two year horses where the winner will get $300,000.
