Brazil’s Canarinho overcame host Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) 4-3 in an exciting final of the club’s six-a-side football tournament which was contested on Sunday.
Known for their artistry and flair, the Brazilians were evenly matched the GCC players, as they gave the crowd much to cheer about. Jefferson put the visitors ahead in the 5th minute before doubling the lead in the 8th. Gabrael netted two minutes later, but guest player Trevon Griffith pulled one back for the host just before half time as they went to the break at 3-1.
Griffith reduced the advantage just after the interval with another strike before Robin Bacchus found the equalizer moments later. The contest could have gone either side as both teams came close to scoring; however Silas snatched the winner for Canarinho in the last of the 30 minutes regulation time.
GCC overcame GCC Hockey 3-1 courtesy of a Joshua Wade hat-trick, while goals either side of half time by Jefferson and Patrick gave Conarinho a 2-1 win over the Hockey team in earlier matches. Conarinho received a trophy.
The event was organized by the host, Brazil Embassy and European Union who also participated in the tournament. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, GCC captain Greame Alli congratulated the teams and said the main aim of the event is to promote unity through sports. He said the affair will be held on a regular basis. (Zaheer Mohamed)
