An Accountant detained by investigators last week following an arson attempt at the offices of the Ministry of Communities, Kingston, was granted station bail over the weekend.
But the probe is continuing, Government officials assured yesterday.
The Accountant was reportedly seen on camera with a container in his hands in the area. However, investigators were unable to find the container or its remains afterwards.
Following the fire on Wednesday, which was contained, police the next day picked up the Government Accountant, who was attached to the Finance Department of the Ministry.
He was held until his bail on Sunday.
On Wednesday afternoon, shortly after Internal Auditors started a probe into last year’s spending of a $1B project to ‘Clean up Guyana,’ staff members were alerted to smoke in the building which houses the Audit Office and the Office of Minister Ronald Bulkan.
Fire investigators found shocking evidence of attempts to set the building on fire as evidenced from kerosene at the scene. Two chairs and the walls were badly damaged. The chairs were in a room not far from the Audit Office that reportedly held receipts and other documents pertaining to the spending.
The building is largely a wooden one that also houses the Office of Minister Ronald Bulkan.
