Dear Editor,
It surely warms my heart to hear one of the more aggressive campaigners on the PPP/C’s list of candidates now railing against the process of bringing to book persons who were less than stellar performers in their occupation during the last regime.
This particular individual while on the platform at Station Street, Kitty, openly called the leadership of the APNU-AFC coalition old vagabonds and other names intended to denigrate and humiliate.
Now to try to equate a subordinate being compelled to do unethical things in order to survive in a job with unprincipled, enthusiastic character assassination is simply asking too much even of the most naïve in this nation. I think that the prospect of being evicted from Echillibar Villas would daunt the most unrepentant of sinners at this time.
Some people have the unmitigated gall to refer to a promise made by those “vagabonds” not to witch hunt, conveniently forgetting that the word of a vagabond is worthless.
One character who refused the coalition’s request for equal opportunity to get its message across to the nation is now howling about unfairness; while another who proclaimed BharratJagdeo as Guyana’s best president is falling all over himself to retain his “prestigious position” as head of a state entity.
Editor, I wager that if perchance the government offers that individual a subordinate position to someone he would have lorded over in the past, he would decamp to Canada so quickly that the sound barrier would be seriously challenged.
I would like to remark on the media report that the Minister of Public Security is satisfied with the rationale offered by the Commissioner of Police on the impending transfers while saying that he also consulted with the deputies of the Police Force.
My only caution to Minister Ramjattan is that he widens his circle of consultants, since not being familiar with the nuances of the organization he is more than likely to accept at face value anything which sounds reasonable coming from limited contacts.
I offer him my best wishes and await more information on how he intends to transform the police force with the same people in the leadership bent on doing the same things in the same ways and hoping to achieve different results.
On the vexing question of stolen assets, all Guyanese are understandably concerned about the billions of dollars misappropriated by the Jagdeo-Ramotar governments. This government will have to proceed with patience, persistence and an understanding of international legal processes if it is to be successful in locating and retrieving our stolen assets.
I do not think that anyone can reasonably argue against using the necessary resources to pursue misappropriated wealth.
Among the sources of questionable wealth are the Treasury, the awarding of fictitious contracts, and through inflated contracts where bribes were paid. We will need to tap into the legal infrastructure of those countries where that corrupt cabal has hidden their ill-gotten wealth and as a stop-gap measure freeze those accounts.
In that regard there is an urgent need for international co-operation between governments, as well as between the public and private sectors
