Dear Editor,
In relation to Ralph Seeram’s column of June 7 “From the Diaspora”, what he left out in his discussion on the government owned media is any reference to why is the government running radio and TV stations.
Especially given Guyana’s racialized politics, radio and TV should be in the private sector with robust regulations to ensure that false information is kept off the air waves but there is robust discussion, respectful of all Guyanese.
Through GINA, government can prepare its own messaging and daily provide radio and TV capsules of about a max 10 minutes which all authorized radio and TV stations must air in time dedicated for government broadcasts.
That’s the model in Jamaica. UG’s communication program can air in full Parliamentary sessions and other national events and educational programming. One would find that the private media would also air certain national events.
