Prisoner killed after shooting cop in head
A young police constable was clinging to life last night after being shot in the head by a berserk prisoner, who was subsequently shot dead by police ranks at Wismar.
Police Constable Victor Fausette, of Belladrum, Berbice, was shot above the left ear at around 19.00 hrs yesterday after the 18-year-old prisoner, relieved him of his service revolver at the Wisroc Police Outpost.
The shooter, identified as Regan Richards, 18, fled the scene, but was subsequently shot dead
by police ranks, who had cornered him at his One Mile Extension, Wismar home.

A police release stated that at around 18.05hrs yesterday, police ranks responded to a report of threatening behaviour in which Regan Richards, who is reported to be mentally unstable, was armed with a cutlass and chasing down residents.
“Regan Richards was arrested and taken into custody at the Wisroc Police Outpost. The circumstances are not yet clear, but while in custody at the Outpost, Regan Richards managed to overpower Police Constable Victor Fausette and take away his service revolver. He then shot the police rank above his left ear and escaped with the firearm.
“Acting on information received police ranks subsequently went to his home where they came under fire from Regan Richards. The police returned fire, hitting him to his body. He was taken to the Mackenzie Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police service revolver, with six spent shells, has been recovered.”
Kaieteur News understands that another rank had arrested Richards and had brought him to the outpost. The rank then left Richards in Fausette’s custody, without placing the prisoner in a cell. It is alleged that Constable Fausette was attempting to place Richards in the lockups, when the mentally ill man attacked the rank, relieved him of his firearm, and shot him in the head.
Nearby residents reportedly heard the gunshot and saw Fausette stagger out of the police outpost before collapsing.
He was rushed to the Mackenzie Hospital, before being transferred late last night to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Sources indicated that his chances of survival were slim.
