A spirited two fisted attack by Dennis Thomas earned him a lopsided unanimous decision over Trinidadian, Aron Prince in their 75kgs duel when the action continued in the Pan American Boxing trials, Tijuana Mexico, last Friday evening. The win proved to be an anti-climax as Thomas went on to surrender a 3-0 verdict to Raul Sanchez of the Dominican Republic when the tournament continued Saturday evening.
Thomas’ countryman, Jason Phillips (64kgs), also fought on Friday evening and turned in a valiant performance but became the third casualty for Guyana when he dropped a 2-1 decision to Nicaraguan, Nelson Diaz.
Thomas’ loss has quelled Guyana’s only remaining hope of qualifying for the Pan American Games slated for Toronto Ontario, Canada, early July. Nevertheless, coach of the team, Sebert Blake is adamant that Thomas had done more than enough to win the bout. “I think (Dennis) should have won; the guy was slapping most of the fight and should have been warned with points deducted but the referee failed to sanction him,” Blake contended.
He said that there is still a slim chance that Thomas might qualify but such fortune depends on the outcome of the semi-final bout between boxers from Dominica and Columbia. He further explained that should Sanchez go on to clinch the gold medal, Thomas, by dint of his good showing, will be in line for a place among those that qualify.
The other two boxers on the team, Delon Charles (56kgs) and Dewani Lampkin (60kgs) had surrendered earlier fights to Tafari Ebanks (Cayman Islands) and Kevin Luna (Guatemala). Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan was to have accompanied the team but was inexplicably left behind even after we were told that GBA administrators had sought an audience with Minister Rupert Roopnarine who had committed to offer support. United States based superheavyweight pugilist, Quincy ‘Biggy’ Small was also selected to represent Guyana but was a no show. The Guyana Boxing Association executive is still to explain these omissions. The tournament concludes tomorrow.
