Even as the rain refused to ‘hold its hand‘ on Friday, staff of Laparkan shipping company refused to abort their initial mission of cleaning the roadside along Lombard Street, between Sussex and Princess Streets. The cleanup campaign which was scheduled to begin at 6:00am kicked off to a late start but was well executed anyway.
When Kaieteur News visited the area, staff from various departments within the Shipping Company was seen in three different groups busy at their task.
According to Rabindra Ramsuran, an employee, the activity was organized by the administration of the company. He said that it was great to see so many staff members showing up to participate.
Like many of the other cleanup groups around the City, the team was in high spirits and even remained in the rain to show their pride in restoring the City. There were also police ranks on the spot monitoring the traffic with concern for the safety of the team as they traversed the roadway. Among the works being done was digging of drains, weeding, and removing of refuse.
Ramsuran disclosed that there are plans to continue this exercise.
Meanwhile, over at Louisa Row, residents initiated a similar operation from Norton Street to D’urban Street. They were seen cleaning the drains and plan to paint the culvert right on the corner of D’urban and Louisa Row.
The ‘cleanup fever’ began when President David Granger, with the help of BK International and other private companies began rehabilitation work on the national Independence Monument at the head of Brickdam and Vlissengen road.
According to the Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has been responding to various cleanups around the City. And the cleanup campaign continues across the nation.
