Rainy season hinders fogging exercises
As Guyana continues to experience its May-June rainy season, fogging exercises have apparently come to a halt due to the inclement weather.
For months, fogging exercises had been on the top of the Vector Control Services (VCS) list of priorities. However, these were hindered by the onset of the rainy season.
Fogging exercises have currently been halted as Guyana experiences its first rainy season of this year.
This is according to VCS Director, Dr. Reyaud Rahman who highlighted the constraints.
“We haven’t been doing as much fogging around the city as we did before and that’s specifically because we have such a heavy rainfall,” Dr. Rahman said.
He explained that though the VCS had been instructed by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Shamdeo Persaud to continue its exercises, it was not possible.
“I know we are in the rainy season and because of the heavy rainfall and so we haven’t been able to do these things,” he said.
He added that health concerns were a major factor to be taken into consideration.
“We didn’t want to spray chemicals into the environment, especially with all this water around and so and we don’t want to cause harm to the public when we’re supposed to be helping them,” he explained. He continued, “So that’s one of the reasons we haven’t done much fogging so far but as soon as the weather subsides and we get clear, sunny weather, we’re going to restart our fogging.”
The VCS’s exercises had been particularly rampant during last year’s appearance of the vector-borne Chikungunya disease. Then, the VCS had established fogging schedules throughout the country, focusing particularly on sections of Georgetown and Region Six.
