Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings on Friday
Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings and Region Four Chairman, Clement Corlette and other regional officials during a visit to the Chateau Margot Primary School, East Coast Demerara
visited the Montrose, Chateau Margot and Vryheid’s Lust Primary, and Better Hope Nursery schools on the East Coast of Demerara that remained closed following the flood which occurred on May 31.
According to the Minister who was accompanied by the Regional Chairman, Clement Corlette, and Education and Environmental officers, the visits were done to assess the environment in which the students have to dwell, when they return to school tomorrow.
The Minister also interacted with teachers of the schools, who complained of the drains not being cleared regularly.
Minister Cummings said that the plan is to collaborate with the Education and Community Ministries to ensure that the environment will be properly maintained, so as to avoid major disasters in these areas.
“We need to continue to have inter-sectoral collaboration, because the Ministries that are involved are health, education and communities. So definitely we are going to go back to the drawing board and see how best we can work together…we will speak with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) to ensure drains will be cleared on a regular basis, to be proactive
rather than being reactive,” Minister Cummings explained.
She said what is ‘doable’ will be done to ensure that the environment be well protected. She said that the regional administration and health and environmental officers need to collaborate to see how they can work closely with not only the schools, but the community as a whole.
The Minister said that she was quite satisfied with the works that were done to clear the drains, however, she believes that more can be done because some of the drains are still clogged.
At the Vryheid’s Lust School, there is an ICT tower in the compound that is blocking the water from escaping, and concerns were also raised about animals in the compound and clogged drains. Minister Cummings promised that she will engage the relative authority to see what can be done to remedy that situation.
On Friday Guyana joined in celebrating World Environmental Day which was celebrated under the theme “Seven Billion Dreams-One Planet Consume with Care”. Minister Cummings said that the Ministry will be aggressively working to protect the environment, ensuring water ways are free of solid waste and the Guyanese population will be dwelling in a clean and healthy environment, in keeping with its 2020 strategy.
