– B/ce Unruly Gang also impresses, finals set for tonight
Georgetown teams sent an emphatic message to opposing teams from the other four communities on opening night of the Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ National Playoffs which was played on Friday night, at the
Pouderoyen Tarmac.
Of the six teams which is currently representing Georgetown, five were in winners row with Festival City being the only one to lose, succumbing to a determined Melanie ‘B’ unit on sudden death penalty kicks after their encounter ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
The playoffs, which were greeted with overcast conditions, got off to a rousing start with defending Georgetown champions North Ruimveldt putting on a clinic in their clash against Wisroc of Linden.
Rickford Jones hit the target as early as the fourth minute, firing past the last defender into the left side of the goal. He returned three minutes later to net his second after receiving a pass from the right side, before slicing it into the empty goal.
Despite Wisroc’s defensive posture, North Ruimveldt continued to find a few cracks and it was one such occasion that former national midfielder Travis Grant found and exploited beautifully to hit into the goal one minute after the resumption.
Just as Jones had done, Grant was back on the scoresheet three minutes later firing past the
last stop to give his team a comfortable 4-0 cushion, before Wisroc’s Omeion Wills pulled one back four minutes from full time.
Berbice runner-up Unruly Gang also displayed ominous form when they inflicted a 4-0 drubbing of West Side Ballers in the third game of the evening.
Hot favourites West Front Road then crushed a depleted Berbice champions Manchester Boys 6-0 with Michael Oie and Darren Benjamin hitting in a double each.
Sparta Boss the other favourite touted to go all the way duplicated nemesis West Front Road’s performance with a similar 6-0 thrashing of Patentia Streetballers.
The efficient Sheldon Shepherd fired in a brace to lead all scorers.
