Jasodra Mangoor, called ‘Shanta’, 58, 118 Corbin Park Annandale who is currently a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), has not shown any form of improvement from the third degree burns she received on 43% of her body. Acting out of frustration, she reportedly set herself ablaze last Wednesday night in her home.
The woman’s action is believed to have been triggered by the constant verbal abuse meted out to her by her children, especially her 12 year- old daughter.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman had freed herself of a very abusive relationship with her husband and had been working hard to make a better life for herself and children. However according to neighbours all she got in return was ingratitude from her children.
Like any mother, Mangoor’s hurt was deeply aggravated by the disobedience of her youngest daughter. On the night of the incident it is unclear whether a misunderstanding between her and her children was the direct link to her action, but relatives and friends of the woman have contended that it is the initial cause.
The woman’s sister-in-law who shared a close bond with her was uncontrollable as she wept bitterly at the hospital on Thursday after seeing Mangoor’s condition. She described her brother’s former wife (Mangoor) as a very hard working person who worked tirelessly to cater for her six children.
She disclosed the constant beating her in-law endured at the hand of her brother while the two shared a relationship. “He used to beat she… send she fa buy drugs and she used to do buy it… now she move for betterment and watch what she end up into.” In loud wails the sister-in-law blurted out “Since meh see Shanta meh know she na gon mek it.” The woman cried “ow Shanta wa mek yo go and burn yaself… you could’ve come out the house fa ease ya head…”
One of the woman’s neighbours was in disbelief as he said that it was just earlier on the day of the incident that he had paid her for scrubbing his steps and she did not appear to be in any way depressed. Mangoor works as a domestic cleaner.
According to reports, around 10:00pm last Wednesday Jasodra Mangoor showered herself with kerosene while in her kitchen, then locked herself in her bedroom and set herself ablaze.
Kaieteur News understands that attempts by the woman’s daughter to stop her from carrying out the act failed. According the woman’s niece, Melissa, the child had held unto her mother’s hand in an attempt to stop her from dousing herself.
Neighbours, after learning of the ordeal rushed to the woman’s aid. The bedroom door had to be broken down by a neighbour who assisted in rushing the badly burnt Mangoor to the GPHC.
Kaieteur News has since learnt that welfare officers have stepped in to offer counseling to the allegedly uncontrollable 12 year- old. According to a source, the child has been placed into the custody of an older sister.
