Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a taxi driver to prison on Thursday, after he was charged with drug trafficking and ammunition possession.
Mark Prince, a father of four, who resides at 169 James and Curtis Streets, Albouystown, pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Particulars of the first charge alleged that on June 3, at Albouystown, he had 1269 kg of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
It was also alleged that he had six live rounds of 32 ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
The defendant explained to the court that on the day in question, the police came to his apartment and started to “break up” the flooring.
He said that the police allegedly found the marijuana and ammunition under the flooring and arrested him.
Prince stated that there are about 40 persons living in the said building and he cannot understand why the police only arrested him.
However, Police Corporal, Shawn Gonsalves, revealed a different story. He told the court that on June 3, at 05:45hrs ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) went to the defendant’s apartment and conducted a search.
Gonsalves stated that the drugs and ammunition were concealed in the flooring of the defendant’s apartment. At the time of his arrest he told the police, “Officer I done with crime. Is jus li’l weed I hustling now.”
The Prosecutor objected to bail because no special reasons were advanced to satisfy the court.
Prince will return to court on June 15, before Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Meanwhile, over at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, a Diamond resident was released on $100,000 bail after he was charged with wounding.
Ernest Lowe, 47, of 976 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, denied that on April 21, at Diamond he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Mark Ramsammy.
Police Inspector, Michael Grant, told the court that on the day in question, the victim and the accused had a misunderstanding which led to a fight.
Grant said that both parties sustained injuries as a result of the fight. Ramsammy suffered from a dislocated shoulder.
Since the Prosecutor had no objections to bail, Magistrate Leron Daley granted the accused his pre trial liberty.
He will return to court on July 20.
