– Govt. anticipates other such actions
Director of the Government Information Agency (GINA), Neaz Subhan, has sent a letter of resignation to the Minister of Information, Moses Nagamootoo, while several others are expected to follow suit. Subhan sent his letter on Wednesday last.
Beverley Alert, a former GINA employee, is tipped to replace Subhan. Alert is a member of the Alliance For Change (AFC) component in the new coalition government.
Director of Public Information, Imran Khan told Kaieteur News yesterday that Subhan “has acted honourably” in submitting his resignation.
Khan said that the construct and tone of Subhan’s letter of resignation was cordial and decent “I offered him kudos and my personal best wishes.”
“I met with him yesterday (Wednesday) and we had a civil and cordial meeting during which we had a frank and respectful exchange of thoughts and ideas. He indicated his intention to resign and did so as he had committed.”
Subhan’s resignation has given the requisite one month’s notice as per his contractual agreement.
Khan told Kaieteur News that a decision is yet to be taken as to whether the government will allow Subhan to work until that month ends.
Khan said that there seems to be many professionals currently employed with the state media who are prepared to work with integrity and purpose in lifting the standard. “These persons should have no worry that there will be any witch hunt against them.”
On the other hand, he was keen to point out that “there are persons in the state media and at GINA whose
conscience should instruct them as to what the honourable thing to do is. Neaz has set an admirable example.”
Khan said that the move towards professionalizing will require the absence of many “toxic” individuals.
He added, “We have demanded the resignations of no one, but equally persons would be naïve to think that given their history of willfully presiding over the appalling discriminatory practices in maligning the people’s representatives in parliament, in condoning reprehensible racist attacks against persons and of allowing themselves to be professionally compromised, of surrendering their professional ethics and dignity, that they would have a place in the process of moving forward. The public can have no confidence in these persons. “
Khan said that the new government is not going to be a protectorate of persons who for years have aided abetted the misuse of the state media.
“Change and progress demand that personnel are changed, that leadership is changed. We cannot have change by having the same people in the same positions with the same mindset doing the same things,” said Khan.
Kaieteur News understands that the new government is anticipating the resignations of other senior officials.
It is also expected that members of both the NCN and Chronicle Boards of Directors will be replaced.
