Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ National Championship…
Having traversed five communities where individual winners were identified it is now time for a national champion to be crowned to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Championship scheduled to be
played from June 26-29 in Kingston, Jamaica.
The highly popular Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ national championship begins tonight with eight matches involving teams from Georgetown, Berbice, Linden, East Coast Demerara and West Bank/West Coast Demerara, at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, West Demerara.
Representing Georgetown will be champion North Ruimveldt, Leopold Street, Sparta Boss, Festival City, Globe Yard and West Front Road. Berbice will be represented by champion Manchester Boys and Unruly Gang, while Linden will have reigning champion Amelia’s Ward Russians and Wisroc.
The teams that will be appearing for the East Coast Demerara are defending champs Beterverwagting ‘A’, Nabacalis and Melanie ‘B’, while West Bank / West Coast Demerara will be represented by champion West Side Ballers, Showstoppers and Patentia Street Ball;ers.
The fixtures for the night are: North Ruimveldt versus Wisroc and this game will be followed by the clash between Russians and Globe Yard. Immediately after, West Side Ballers take on Unruly and this game will precede the encounter that features West Front Road and Manchester, before the break.
After the resumption, Leopold Street engages Nabaclis, before Festival City tackles Melanie ‘B’.
Sparta Boss then go up against Patentia Street Ballers and in the final game of the night, BV ‘A’ and Showstoppers square off.
Apart from the right to be Guyana’s representative at the regional competition, the winning team will take home $500,000 and a trophy, while the second, third and fourth placed teams cart off $250,000, $150,000 and $75,000 respectively.
The competition will continue tomorrow at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac and Sunday when the finals will be played at Demerara Park. Starting time each night is 19:30 hrs sharp.
