A suspected bandit was shot in the face last night after police opened fire when he pointed a gun at them during a confrontation on West Coast Demerara last night.
The suspect who was identified as Atiba Gardner, 39, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, is listed in a stable condition at a public hospital.
According to reports, the police received information about an intended robbery and they went into action in two unmarked vehicles.
The ranks intercepted the suspects’ car at Stewartville. One of the would-be bandits came out and pointed his gun at the police in an attempt to escape.
The police said that ranks opened fire hitting the suspect and rendering him immobile. They recovered from him a .32 revolver.
The man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was receiving treatment up to late last night.
They also apprehended his two accomplices who were in the car.
