Dear Editor,
In the May 15 issue of the Kaieteur News some very helpful views were expressed by Ms. Khadija Musa, UN Resident Coordinator to Guyana.
She was reported as saying, “It is very important for Guyanese to think of themselves as Guyanese and not as Indo-Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese, Amerindian-Guyanese, Portuguese-Guyanese or whatever their background is” This is a very significant message from a very significant international organization – the UN. All Guyanese need to take it to heart.
All patriotic Guyanese should be interested in peace, progress and a healthy, decent lifestyle for all of us. We consider it very important to place national unity above ethnic identifications. There are many multi racial nations that have done extremely well despite their ethnic diversity.
A classical example is Singapore which is a model worth emulating. Here Chinese, Tamil, Malay, Eurasian and other races have joined hearts and hands to work in harmony and have built a splendid nation. For many reasons people move from one part of the world to resettle in another. Therefore one will hardly find any nation today which is 100% one ethnicity. Wherever there is love, trust and mutual respect things go well.
Nation-building is not merely a series of unrelated ad hoc political events. It has to do with the general flow of national life. Nation building is the process by which a people develops and enhances their political, social, cultural, economic, and even their geographical identity.
Therefore nation building involves a balanced combination of people’s capacities regardless of their ethnicity, religion or other differences. Simply stated racial harmony is essential for nation building.
Every Guyanese therefore need to embrace this vital principle and make a conscious effort to enhance our national maturity. We have to accept that the ethnic diversity of Guyana will always be there and we have to work within this multiplicity.
In the Bible in Acts chapter 17 the Apostle Paul writing under divine inspiration said that Almighty God “…has made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth…”
We should be a God-fearing people and not question divine wisdom and arrangement when it comes to Guyana’s ethnic diversity. What is right in the sight of Almighty God should be right for us. I congratulate Ms. Khadija Musa and many other international and national figures for offering kind words of guidance to our nation at this very critical time.
One of our principal national goals should be to strengthen ethnic security, national pride, and dignity to all the people of Guyana as well as the international respectability of our country. At this critical time in our history we must do all we can to condemn every overt or covert move to further fragment our nation.
We call on all of our dear Guyanese brothers and sisters to unite hearts and to work hand in hand to build our nation with love, unity and brotherhood at its foundation.
