Police have released the wife of slain taxi driver Dennis Narine, but are still trying to locate her male friend whom they suspect has knowledge of the killing.
An official said that the wife was released on $40,000 station bail. She was detained after police received information that Narine was not the victim of a robbery attempt as was first suggested.
At present, they are seeking to question a male acquaintance of Narine’s wife, but have failed to locate him at his Grove, East Bank Demerara residence. The woman declined comment when Kaieteur News reached her by phone yesterday.
The initial report police received was that Narine, 26, of Lot 598 La Parfaite Harmonie, WBD, was shot to the chest by robbers who were trying to break into his home.
It was alleged that Narine, his wife and three children were asleep when he was aroused by noise at a window.
Narine is said to have quietly alerted his wife to take his three sleeping children to safety, while he armed himself with a cutlass and went to investigate. It was reportedly then that someone fired a shot through the window.
Residents reportedly saw a man fleeing the scene, but were unable to see his features in the darkness.
The slain man’s father said that he is convinced that the report of a robbery is a fabrication.
The victim’s mother, Bibi Shamina Khan, who lives a few doors away, recalled hearing two gunshots at around 02.00 hrs and hearing her daughter-in-law’s screams.
Khan said that she rushed over to check on the family. She found Narine lying in the house and bleeding from a wound to the stomach. According to Ms. Khan, she tried to find out the shooter’s identity, but got no response from her badly wounded son. He succumbed shortly after.
Describing their son as an honest and hard-working individual, the couple insisted that he had no dispute with anyone, while demanding that his killer be brought to justice.
