The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has named the national women’s basketball team
that will compete at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships, British Virgin Island of Tortola, next week; the team departs Saturday.
GABF President, Nigel Hinds informed Kaieteur Sport yesterday that “everything is set” for the team’s departure to Tortola for a second consecutive year. The team will depart Guyana via Ogle to Antigua before moving on to the British Virgin Island.
Asked about the team’s preparation, Hinds believes that the women are a “definitely better team than last year”. He said that the United States of America-based point guard, Miriam McKenzie, is an impressive, strong and very skilled player.
In addition, Hinds noted that forward, Ginelle Ifill, who is on a basketball scholarship also in the United States, has gotten “much strong and better”. Apart from that duo, University of Florida’s, guard/forward, Merisa Lewis has also joined the team.
However, the GABF head noted that one of the weaknesses of the 12-member unit was that there was room for improvement in fitness. Nonetheless, Hinds is of the view that the team will give a good account of itself, given the consistent exposure it is getting.
The 2015 national senior women’s team includes: Miriam McKenzie (Captain); Ginelle Ifill, Tamara Hunter; Sonia Rodney; Shanna Chester; Nichola Jacobs; Merisa Lewis; Kean Andrews; Lowquantor Gibson, Necosia Mitchell, Timike Joseph-De Rouche and Tanika Alphonso.
The team’s management include: Julian Haynes (Head Coach), Kirk Fraser (Assistant Coach), Herbert Adams (Manager) and Sherwin Henry (Guyana’s FIBA Referee). (Edison Jefford)
