Neil Danns netted twice to lead Burnham’s X1 to a comfortable 4-1 win over
Jagan’s X1 when the Golden Jaguars played an Intra Squad practice match to fine tune their final World Cup Qualifying team yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Football field, Leonora.
Played in honor of two of the nation’s founding fathers, Burnham’s X1 led by regular National Captain Christopher Nurse dominated the opening exchanges and the impressive Danns put them ahead in the 12th minute when he beat goalkeeper Matthew Allick from inside the 18-yard box collecting a long ball from midfield.
With each player in the 30-man plus squad being given the opportunity to impress the Technical team, Jagan’s XI gradually gained momentum and made several raids on goal, but shots were sent wide of the net.
Danns doubled the advantage in the 30th minute after receiving a ball from the left side of the area and sent his shot past goalie Derrick Carter who replaced Allick. Burnham’s XI defense stood firm and hardly allowed their opponents any chances of scoring while their midfield
showed more creativity as the game progressed.
They enjoyed a 3-0 advantage at half time when Daniel Wilson found the back of the net after collecting a pass from Sheldon Holder in the 37th minute.
Jagan’s XI showed more purpose in the second half and Emery Welshman headed home a corner in the 57th to reduce the lead, before Marcel Barrington converted in the 77th after being brought down in the area to give Burnham’s XI a handsome and comfortable win.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport after the game Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz said there is still some work to be done. “The game was fine, but there is still work to be done and we have a few more days to get there. We always want to go further and we will continue to push the players,” he added.
Shabazz pointed out that the overseas players are getting acclimatized to the team while expressing confidence that they will provide positive results. The first game of the home and away tie with St. Vincent & the Grenadines is set for next Wednesday at Arnos Vale with the return game set for Sunday, June 14 at Providence.
The Head Coach feels this gives his team an advantage. “Playing away from home gives us the last bite of the cherry when they have to return four days later, so it’s a preparation for two of the biggest games of our life,” he said.
The Golden Jaguars will continue training today at the Providence Stadium while the team for St. Vincent will be announced on Saturday. Departure is on Monday.
