Dear Editor,
I refer to Mr. Freddie Kissoon’s comments about the Cameron & Shepherd law firm, of which I am a partner, in his column of 1 June. These are not Mr. Kissoon’s first on the issue and will very likely not be his last, notwithstanding this clarification.
He said: “It is also public knowledge that before Ralph Ramkarran parted company with the PPP, his law firm Cameron and Shepherd (sic) did most of the complex and important legal cases for the state.”
The Attorney General is the constitutional authority charged with representing the government and state in Court. It is the Attorney General who in fact appears in the “complex and important” cases for the government and state. There has been much publicity about these in recent years. We currently represent the Attorney General in one case and one is on appeal.
We represent several state agencies, as distinct from the state. I wish to state that with rare exceptions, the income received by Cameron & Shepherd for representing these agencies does not exceed five percent of our overall annual income. Modest though it is, it helps to keep some of our staff in employment.
From the time I “parted company with the PPP” until the present, Cameron & Shepherd has not lost any business from any state agency. In fact, there has been an increase.
Maybe there is a reason that the firm is perceived to be – and in many cases is -retained for “complex and important” legal cases. Mr. Kissoon is free to investigate.
Ralph Ramkarran
