A triangular love affair gone wrong, rather than robbery, appears to be the motive behind last Sunday’s murder of taxi driver Dennis Narine, at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
Police yesterday confirmed that detectives have detained Narine’s spouse and have searched a Grove, East Bank Demerara residence for a male acquaintance of the slain man’s wife. However, police failed to locate the suspect.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman has denied that the acquaintance was at the couple’s home when her spouse was slain.
Narine, 26, of Lot 598 La Parfaite Harmonie, WBD was shot to the chest, allegedly by robbers who were trying to break into his home. He was later pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
Residents reportedly saw a man fleeing the scene, but were reportedly unable to see his features in the darkness.
It was alleged that Narine, his wife and three children were asleep when he was aroused by noise at a window.
Narine is said to have quietly alerted his wife to take his three sleeping children to safety, while he armed himself with a cutlass and went to investigate. It was reportedly then that someone fired a shot through the window.
Yesterday, the slain man’s grief-stricken father said that he is convinced that the report of a robbery is a fabrication.
The victim’s mother, Bibi Shamina Khan, who lives a few doors away, recalled hearing two gunshots at around 02.00 hrs and hearing her daughter-in-law’s screams.
Khan said that she rushed over to check on the family.
“I found my son in blood with a hole (wound) to his left side stomach. I picked him up and tried to talk to him and ask him what happened to him but he could not say anything. He just like take a deep breath and that was it.”
The grieving woman said that her son was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
While speaking to reporters on Sunday, Narine‘s mother had ruled out the theory that someone might have carried out a ‘hit’ on her son. At the time, she suggested that he was the victim of a botched burglary.
“My son was a good man. Find out from anybody. He ain’t got no problem with people. He is a very peaceful person. Ask people, he ain’t got problems with people.”
Mrs. Khan however, recalled that her son had received a threat from someone after his car was broken into a few weeks back.
“About two months back, somebody break he windscreen. He made a complaint to the Community Policing Group about it then somebody left a threatening message at the base that he does work taxi, but he ain’t know the person. The person left the message and he just drop the story because he didn’t want trouble with people.”
