Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry released a Corentyne driver of $125,000 bail after he was charged with simple larceny.
Satyanand Paramhance, of Number 71 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, denied the allegation that he stole one hydraulic hose valued $500,000, one engine, a computer box valued $5M among other items all totaling $14.8M, property of Anand Persaud.
Paramhance explained to the court that he has no pending or previous matters and that the victim is his brother.
Police Corporal, Bharrat Mangru, told the court that the defendant and victim are known to each other. He said that during the month of November 2014, Persaud secured his mining equipment, left them in care of the defendant and went overseas.
When Persaud returned last month he was informed that the defendant had removed his items. The victim subsequently made a report to the police and the accused was arrested and charged.
The prosecutor objected to bail citing the seriousness, prevalence and penalty attached to the offence. He also pointed out the value of the items allegedly stolen and the fact that they were not recovered.
Mangru also informed the court that the defendant provided the police with a statement indicating that it was his friends, who had stolen the items.
However, his compelling objections were overruled by the Magistrate as she granted the accused bail and ordered that he return to court on June 11, at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
At that hearing the matter is expected to be called for reports and fixtures.
Meanwhile, a Chinese national was ordered to pay a fine of $30,000 after he pleaded guilty to an illegal entry charge.
The charge alleged that at Springlands Corentyne, Dafang Tian, entered Guyana by sea and disembarked without the consent of an Immigration Officer.
He explained through an interpreter that he did not have the money to pay the fine and requested to make contact with his family.
