Heavy rainfall resulted in the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) postponing the final day of its Junior National Squash Championship, but it was Ben Mekdeci, Michael Alphonso and the Wiltshires who made it rain on Saturday when the penultimate day of the Woodpecker Products sponsored tournament, hosted by the GSA with the aid of its corporate sponsor Digicel continued with a day of exciting matches.
Mekdeci, Shomari, Akeila and Larissa recorded victories unscathed, while Alphonso made it four wins in four matches, losing only one game along the way.
Makeda Harding and Sarah Lewis produced the match of the morning session, which ending with a 3-2 result in favor of the 12 year old Harding.
Harding took the first hard fought game 13/11, but lost the following two 11/9, 11/7, before regrouping to take the fourth game 11/9. She then dominated the deciding game with an 11/5 demolition of her opponent.
Maya Collins hung on gamely against Rebecca Low despite a 3-1 defeat, managing to hold on to a 12/10 third game victory against the talented Low.
Both Low and Sarah Lewis efficiently defeated newcomer Adriel Lachmansingh 3-0, while there were also wins for Paige Fernandes, Kirsten Gomes and Haley Carpenter in an extended morning session.
In Boys results of the morning Ben Mekdeci and Shomari Wiltshire extended their unbeaten streak, each adding two more 3-0 victories to strengthen their hold on 1st places in the Under-17 and Under-13 categories respectively.
The two continued their supremacy by winning again in the evening, as Mekdeci defeated Anthony Islam and Matthew Phang and Shomari defeated Gianni Carpenter, all 3-0. Nyron Joseph was clinical in his defeat of Alec Melville, displaying his skill in a high energy match which he controlled from start to finish with smarter use of the court.
The powerfully built Melville managed to wrestle several points in each game with extravagant cross court shots but ultimately the shot selection of Joseph proved the deciding factor in a 3-0 sweep of the match.
The contrasting skills of Akeila and Larissa Wiltshire saw them register 3-0 victories over Sarah Lewis and Rebecca Low respectively. The younger, taller Larissa gradually eased into her stride in a game which she dominated with agility and gusto, using powerful shots from the backcourt to good effect. The elder Akeila showed her pedigree of shot selection as she employed the drop and cross court strokes against the younger Rebecca Low, who showed fight in several hard fought rallies and would have benefitted from the experience of playing against a more seasoned foe.
In other games to round out the evening Abosaide Cadogan recorded a memorable 3-0 victory over Teija Edwards and Makeda Harding continued an impressive tournament with a 3-0 win over Madison Fernandes. With the capital city under siege by heavy rainfall the final stages of the tournament has been postponed until further notice.
