Despite finishing third in the final stage, Orville Hinds was crowned champion of the 33rd National Independence three-stage cycle road race which concluded yesterday.
Hinds clocked the overall distance of 171.5 miles (274.3 km) in six hours, 50 minutes and 32 seconds to claim the crown. He finished fifth in the first and took the runner up spot in the second stage. Michael Anthony who won the second stage grabbed the runner up position overall in a time of six hours, 52 minutes and 26 seconds. He was followed by Raul Leal whose timing was six hours, 54 minutes and 31 seconds, Geron Williams six hours, 54 minutes and 59 seconds, Alonzo Ambrose six hours, 57 minutes and 15 seconds and Marlon Williams six hours, 57 minutes and 19 seconds.
Raphael Leung clocked six hours, 58 minutes, 49 seconds to take the junior category, while Jamal John finished second in seven hours, 00 minutes, 45 seconds and Romello Crawford third in seven hours, 07 minutes, 04 seconds.
The veterans segment was taken by Ian Jackson in six hours, 57 minutes, 57 seconds ahead of Junior Niles six hours, 58 minutes, 35 seconds and Everald Mandy seven hours, 06 minutes and 04 seconds.
Meanwhile, amid heavy down pour Jamal John won the third and final stage which commenced with 24 starters from the mining town of Linden and concluded at Carifesta Avenue in Georgetown instead of the water logged Homestretch Avenue. John finished the leg in 2 hours, 49 minutes and 57 seconds. Shaquille Agard, Hinds, Marlon Williams and Geron Williams completed the top five in that order.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony which was held at Carifesta Avenue Sports Complex, Minister of Education with responsibility for Sports Dr. Rupert Roopnarine congratulated the riders and thanked all those who assisted with the successful staging of the event. He assured that his ministry will continue to assist with the development of the sport.
President of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Cheryl Thompson said that the event was keenly contested despite the absence of overseas riders.
