Dear Editor,
I would rather take a break from activism after eighteen years. I believe deep down in the inner recesses of my being that the Government of Guyana will bring about significant positive changes that will benefit Guyana in the first five years of governance.
I would rather now spend time facebook posting songs that would solicit two or three Likes, as I slink into virtual oblivion.
A weekend in France is also on the cards. But it would be remiss of me not to respond to a few very serious concerns, coming from a number of young people, that have bombarded my inbox.
Permit me to register in the strongest possible terms that the greatest symbolic act that should be recognised, honored and celebrated in our recent historic change is that of the rise of a nation of young people who became aware, aroused and connected to a revolution that saw them sweeping the Granger Administration to victory.
They empowered themselves and with a wave of electrifying energy brought hope and glory to a battered and bruised nation. They literally designed and led the revolution.
If one of the first significant acts of HE President David Granger is to put the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport as a “sub” ministry under that of the Ministry of Education, then a clear message is transferred that does not auger well in relation to truly empowering young people and giving them the leadership roles where their independence is seen and respected and allowed to flourish through their own vision and ingenuity, albeit with some guidance and advice from the Government.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport MUST be returned to one that is separate if not distinct from any other overarching ministry. President David Granger with all his good intentions must allow genuine consultation with young people and let them have a major say in how his Administration crafts such decisions.
The era of master leader was destroyed by the power of young people in Guyana, just about two weeks ago. It must not raise its head again, much-less, this soon.
Further, the composition of the Cabinet can in no way reflect that there has been any genuine trust or confidence in the leadership qualities and abilities of our young men and women.
Many of these young people have returned qualified from studying abroad in a wide range of disciplines that are in tune with the realities of progress in a modern world. Many at home have crafted their own cultural paradigms in sync with that which is confined to their progressive outlook of how they wish to shape their own future and destiny. They must be allowed to fully expand in that regard.
I therefore call on the Government of Guyana to reassess their approach in relation to the recent handling of the highest decision making body of our youths. I call on His Excellency President David Granger to reverse that decision and free up the young people and let them design the architecture of their own development and progressive outlook of the future that belongs to them and generations to come. Young people being the future must not just be a political rhetoric.
