Despite being in office for just over two weeks the new administration under the stewardship of His Excellency President David Granger and the Honourable Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo has already demonstrated its commitment to forging a new path for the youths of this country, more specifically our athletes.
The Kaieteur News of Saturday, May 30 reported that the boxing team which departed of Friday to participate in the Pan American trials in Mexico was finally able to make the trip due to the support offered by the Minister responsible for Sport Dr. Rupert Roopnarine.
The Minister’s intervention followed exhaustive appeals made by Guyana Boxing Association President (GBA) Steve Ninvalle calling for financial assistance to offset travelling and other related expenses.
This development is wlecomed news for our athletes who’ve been subjected to disappointment after disappointment due to the lack of adequate support from the previous government.
This support follow on the heels of a similar gesture made to the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation that will be sending male and female teams to the Caribbean Championships slated for Tortola next month.
Just like the euphoric feeling that permeated among the citizens of this nation which was emphatically revealed during the inauguration ceremony not so long ago at the National Stadium, the early prognosis indicates that national teams will definitely enjoy much more support from an administration that is already exhibiting the kind of care and attention to the citizens of this wonderful country that was terribly absent.
The new administration is leading by example and it is this kind of leadership that will encourage more corporate entities to follow suit and extend their generosity to our athletes.
Our boxers looked impeccably decked out in their attire as a travelling contingent and this outlook can quickly instigate national pride and a determination to do well for country.
It was reminiscent of the way our athletes looked previously, during a period when we dominated the entire Caribbean in many disciplines, and should the other components (coaching expertise, state-of-the-art facilities) be provided, our journey to regain our rightful place within the Region and beyond may not seem impossible after all.
Our youths must be given the opportunity to excel in whatever sphere of endeavour they choose and this new government has begun to supply the light in a tunnel that grew darker and darker before May 11.
We must complement the efforts of our youths who’ve struggled for so long it is time that the administrators of Sport put their collective energies together to create a new generation of sport stars.
There is understandable optimism that Dr. Roopnarine will remain committed in his support for our athletes, but even with his best effort, the united resolve of all stakeholders will be crucial for success.
While it is understood that the government does not possess unrestricted financial reserves, a check list of priorities could ensure that resources are placed in the right areas.
Can we do it, yes we can.
