Even after Guyana’s Massive Independence celebrations, the clean-up efforts around Georgetown have continued and have seen many local businesses pitching in and making their contributions.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RUBIS Service Station, on Vlissengen Road, Steve Chung is also playing his part.
Yesterday, several of his staff armed themselves with paint brushes, cutlasses and rakes as they spearheaded a mini campaign to clean up the entity’s immediate surroundings.
The energized work force, which consisted of mostly men, came out around 16 hrs to start the exercise. The activities included cleaning drains, removing garbage from the area and the painting of bridges.
In an interview the company’s CEO said that he was motivated by the recent clean up drives around the city and decided to embark on his own project. He added that he wanted to contribute in restoring Georgetown to the ‘Garden City. Chung continued “we decided to get on board because everyone is a part of it, everybody loves this government”.
The cleanup campaign, under the new government initially commenced at the Independence Arch, on Brickdam. From then the campaigns have moved to several parts of the city. Several companies like Courts, Gizmos and Gadgets, BaiShanLin and Scotia Bank have committed themselves to the clean up revolution. They have contributed by making large monetary donations or by rendering manual assistance.
Public spirited citizens, members of the Guyana Fire Service and even market vendors have made their contributions. It is hoped that the initiative will continue all year long and that business will continue to demonstrate their commitment to ensuring that the state of capital city is improved.
