….announces tango team to bolster cultural integration
The Embassy of Argentina has congratulated the election of Guyana’s new government, last night. And the two nations committed themselves to regional cooperation. The occasion was the 205th anniversary of Argentine Independence.
At a reception on Friday at the Marriott Hotel, Kingston, Argentine Ambassador, Luis Alberto Martino, reaffirmed his country’s continued cooperation with Guyana, since the re-establishment of the foreign mission in 2011. The Ambassador also relayed congratulations from the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, to newly elected President David Granger.
Ambassador Martino was keen to acknowledge the essential role Guyana has in acting as link between the Caribbean South American regions.
“Guyana plays a fundamental role as a bridge in the integration process, for paving a path in regional integration through CARCIOM and UNASUR,” said the Ambassador.
He cited the Argentine government’s recent offer to CARICOM to open a regional office in the country’s capital, Buenos Aires, through the organisation’s secretariat in Guyana as a continued effort in achieving greater regional cooperation.
The Argentine official noted the support Guyana has given Argentina with relation to his country’s sovereign claim over the Islas Malvinas.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude on behalf of the people and government of Argentina for the traditional support of the people of Guyana in the sovereignty rights of my country,” said Ambassador Martino.
He went on to reveal Argentina’s “firm intention” to start a new phase of bilateral cooperation between Guyana and the southern nation. Ambassador Martino said that his country is looking to be involved in all sectors of government agencies as well as Guyana’s private sector. He indentified areas for strong bilateral integration in the agriculture, health, sports and cultural sectors among others.
With regards to culture, Ambassador Martino announced that his country will be sending a team of Tango dancers to tour Guyana, for a feature production at the National Cultural Centre on June 7 from 20:00hours.
The Argentine official reiterated this move as a step in achieving closer bilateral ties between his country and Guyana, in what is hoped will be a “prosperous future”.
Speaking on behalf of the Guyana Government was newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge, as he expressed his excitement at the introduction of the Tango team to this country.
Minister Greenidge congratulated Argentina in reaching an important milestone in the nation’s history, as it remains one of “our major friends in South America”. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to work closely with all sectors of society, the Diaspora to actively pursue attractive foreign investment into the country.
Improving the participation of regional bodies like UNASUR and CARICOM, according to the government official, is an aim of his administration to offer opportunities for national and international partners “to achieve political, economic and social objectives.”
“We seek to strengthen relations with our traditional partners and to build new and beneficial relationships with new partnerships,” said Minister Greenidge.
