Woodpecker Products, Digicel Jr Nat Squash Tournament…
On a cold night in the City there were some heated battles on the second day of the Guyana Squash
Association’s (GSA) National Junior Squash Tournament, sponsored by Woodpecker Products and Digicel at the Georgetown Club on Camp Road on Thursday evening.
Larissa Wiltshire defeated Rebecca Low in straight sets in the Girls category, while her brother Shomari Wiltshire got past John Phang by a similar margin in the Boys division. Kamir Khan, Micheal Alphonso, Makeda Harding and Mohryan Baksh also registered convincing wins on a night of competitive Squash.
Alexander Cheeks and Matthew Phang were the only players to concede a set as they were challenged by brothers Anthony and Daniel Islam respectively, as both games ended 3-1 in favour of Cheeks and Phang.
Samuel Ince-Carvahal overcame the challenge of Lucas Jonas who fought his way to a 10/5 lead in the second game before losing 12/10 to his unrelenting opponent, who took the match emerging victorious in the final game 11/4 for a 3-0 sweep.
The experienced players all dominated as those new to the game continued to put up spirited showings at this level. Abosaide Cadogan, who played in the Skill Levels Tournament in April, upped her game but still lost to Madison Fernandes, 3-0.
The tournament is anticipated to produce closer matches as the competition progresses. Action was scheduled to continue last night with seniors such as another Wilshire (Akeila) and Nyron Joseph still to compete.
