– OPR investigating
The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is investigating the shooting death of a burglary suspect by police at around 03.30 hrs yesterday.
A police statement said that the suspect was slain after attacking police ranks with a chopper. This allegedly occurred after the suspect and another man had attempted to break into a Regent Street store.
While police said that the slain man is unidentified, a source identified him as Leslie Semple, called ‘Johnny Ringo,’ but gave no age or address. Semple is said to be a petty criminal.
It is unclear why the OPR is being asked to investigate this case, though there are reports that Semple was shot in the chest and neck. The OPR investigates shootings in which there are suggestions of police misconduct.
A police release stated that around 03.00 hrs, police ranks responded to a report of a breakage on a city store at Regent Street, Bourda.
“On arrival, the police managed to arrest one of the men. Another suspect who was in the process of climbing over the fence to the compound, jumped down and attacked the ranks with a chopper.
“The police was forced to resort to the use of force and the suspect was shot to his body. He was pronounced DOA at the GPHC.” It added that the so far unidentified man, who is of African descent appears to be in his mid-thirties, is brown in complexion and five feet two inches in height.
“The Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is conducting investigations into the incident.”
Kaieteur News understands that the man identified as Leslie Semple was shot by a Police Corporal who is stationed at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary. He was reportedly accompanied by two constables, who are also stationed at CID Headquarters.
The ranks have reportedly stated that they were in the vicinity of Household Plus in Regent Street, Bourda, when the suspect, who was in the store compound, said ‘look police coming.’ The suspect allegedly then attempted to attack the ranks with a chopper and the Corporal discharged two shots in his direction.
The burglar allegedly fled the scene. According to a source, the ranks claimed that they contacted an IMPACT patrol, which arrived and found the burglar lying motionless in the vicinity of Robb and Light Streets.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC.
